We all know that because of IP address we can uniquely identify a device on internet.

But have you ever wondered to know who allocated these IP addresses.

ARIN and RIR are those organisations which manage the IP address of the whole world

ISP ( Internet Service Provider) reach to them and register block of IP addresses. These ISP provider assigned IP addresses to their customers(modem) and these IP are "public" and they are unique globally. Do you know, what is public IP address? If no Let's learn....

IP addresses are of two types:

  1. PUBLIC IP ADDRESS
  2. PRIVATE IP ADDRESS

ISP assigned Public IP which is registered on internet and globally unique. Router assign Private IP to your devices which is not unique globally, but unique within your network. How router can assign private IP addresses to your devices?

It is because of DHCP(Dynamic Host Control Protocol) which is present in your router and allocate unique IP addresses to your devices so that when Internet sends the response, correct device can recieve that response.

When you search for anything on Internet, they will see your registered public IP address only.

How is that possible ?

NAT( Network Access Translator) translate your device's private IP address to public IP address(registered one) and vice versa while getting response.
